Summary

  • Criminal Minds’ “Lucky” episode shocked viewers with a disturbing plot involving a cannibal serial killer named Floyd “Lucky” Ferell.

  • The reveal of Tracy Lambert’s fate as Lucky’s victim remains one of the most haunting moments in Criminal Minds history.

Criminal Minds‘ “Lucky” saw a woman named Tracy Lambert being kidnapped by a serial killer, with her fate being one of the show’s most disturbing reveals. Criminal Minds found its group of elite FBI agents dealing with serial killers and horrifying murders just about every week. The series debuted in 2005 and revolved around the BAU having to profile and track down killers. Despite the subject matter, Criminal Minds became a hit both for its intensity and likable cast. The show even survived the surprise departure of Mandy Patinkin following Criminal Minds season 2.

The series had a roster of great guest stars playing the killers in question, including Aubrey Plaza as assassin Cat Adams and C. Thomas Howell as “The Reaper.” While he only appeared in two Criminal Minds episodes, Jamie Kennedy also left a major impression. Kennedy – best known for playing Randy in the first two Scream movies – first appeared in Criminal Minds season 3 episode “Lucky.” Kennedy played Floyd Feylinn Ferell (AKA “Lucky”), a man the BAU suspected of being a killer when they investigated a case in Florida and was directly tied to Tracy Lambert.

The members of the Behavioral Analysis Unit travel to Florida in season 3, episode 8 of Criminal Minds. When Tracy Lambert is kidnapped, the team helps to coordinate searches for her and investigates the most prominent volunteers who they believe are inserting themselves into the investigation. One of those volunteers is Lucky, who they begin to suspect isn’t just a serial killer who has taken Tracey, but also a cannibal.

As the episode’s story unravels, the team finds that Lucky is a Satanist who likes to force-feed victims the fingers of other people he has murdered to taunt the authorities when their bodies are discovered. Since the killer typically keeps victims alive for 72 hours, the team believes there’s a chance she can be saved during the investigation. They place pressure on Lucky during interrogations in the hope of finding her alive.

That hope is dashed in revolting fashion when the local priest arrives to appeal to Floyd – who the BAU has in custody – and after the priest assures Lucky that “God is in all of us,” the killer looks up with an evil smirk and states, “So is Tracy Lambert.

The team realizes that Floyd served food from his restaurant to the volunteers searching for Tracy Lambert, who had already been killed, and Lucky used her flesh as part of the chili he fed to the search party. His actions make everyone searching for Tracy a part of his crimes. It’s still one of the most shocking reveals on Criminal Minds and is made all the more chilling by Kennedy’s low-key delivery and the laugh he gives as the furious priest tries to attack him.

So is Tracy Lambert,” is considered one of the most disturbing reveals of a victim’s fate on Criminal Minds, even when the show has so many to choose from. Kennedy later returned for Criminal Minds season 13 episode “Lucky Strikes” when the BAU encountered a seemingly reformed Lucky years later. That episode also marked the last outing for Shemar Moore’s Derek Morgan
